Kelvin's Cairn
-
Icewind Dale Mountain
Score 355
02/05/25Towering over the frozen wastes of Icewind Dale, Kelvin’s Cairn stands as a solitary, foreboding monolith, a stark contrast to the otherwise flat and featureless tundra that surrounds it. Rising 1,000 feet into the sky, its jagged slopes loom over the land, while the deep river valley carved at its base reaches nearly as far down as the mountain rises, making it one of the most striking natural landmarks in the North.
Snow and ice cling eternally to its wind-scoured peak, and those who dare to scale its treacherous slopes do so at great peril. The Cairn is a place of both legend and danger, revered by warriors and feared by the unprepared.
Kelvin’s Cairn is utterly unique in its surroundings. Unlike the towering Spine of the World that forms Icewind Dale’s southern border, this mountain stands alone—a singular pillar of stone, shaped by the relentless winds and ice of the Dale’s merciless climate.
Sheer, jagged cliffs define its northern and eastern faces, while the southern and western slopes consist of a chaotic mess of broken boulders and shifting scree, remnants of countless rockslides that have shaped the mountain over the centuries. At its base, the land is rugged and uneven, pocked with deep crevasses and hidden caves formed by the relentless freeze-and-thaw cycles of the Dale’s harsh winters. The valley beneath the Cairn is an icy chasm, carved by an ancient glacier long since retreated, leaving behind twisting ravines and frozen waterfalls.
Though not the tallest peak in Faerun, the isolation of Kelvin’s Cairn makes it one of the most formidable, as no other mountain stands within hundreds of miles. For this reason, it has long been a beacon for wanderers, a navigational marker for hunters, explorers, and outcasts seeking shelter in its shadow.
Among the Reghedmen barbarians, Kelvin’s Cairn is a place of divine importance, tied to the ancient war-god Tempus and his battle against the mighty frost giant Kelvin.
According to legend, Long ago, Kelvin was a giant warlord, a brute who sought to claim Icewind Dale as his own. He called upon the power of winter, summoning raging storms and driving the Reghedmen to the brink of extinction. In answer to their prayers, Tempus, the god of war, descended from the heavens, clad in blood-red armor and wielding an axe wreathed in fire. The battle between Tempus and Kelvin raged for days, shaking the earth and splitting the sky with thunder. Finally, with a mighty strike, Tempus slew Kelvin, and the giant’s massive body collapsed upon the tundra. As a testament to his victory, Tempus took up his axe and carved into the land itself, raising a vast cairn of stone over the fallen giant’s body—hence the name Kelvin’s Cairn.
To this day, Reghedmen warriors pay homage to Tempus at the mountain’s base, performing blood rites and battle prayers before venturing into combat. Some even claim that, in the coldest nights of winter, Kelvin’s spirit still lingers, his howling fury carried by the wind that whips around the mountain’s peak.
Kelvin’s Cairn is far from uninhabited. Though no town or village dares settle too close to its unforgiving slopes, many creatures and outcasts call its caverns and cliffs home.
Climbers who attempt to scale Kelvin’s Cairn do so at great peril, for the freezing winds, loose rock, and lurking dangers ensure that only the strongest survive the ascent. Those who fail are often lost to the mountain, their bones buried beneath the snow, their names forgotten.
