Ten-Towns Settlement

Perched on the northwestern shore of Lac Dinneshere, Caer-Dineval is a weather-beaten fishing town in the Ten Towns of Icewind Dale, its history steeped in hardship and rivalry. The settlement clings to the icy cliffs in a half-circle around Knucklehead Harbor, watched over by the ancient fortress—the caer—that lends the town its name.

Long ago, travelers seeking Caer-Dineval were forced to follow the rocky shoreline of Lac Dinneshere for several arduous hours before finally glimpsing the crenelated walls of the caer, standing defiantly atop the Cliffs of Dinev. Though it has lost its former grandeur, the castle remains the town’s most prominent structure, a bastion against the howling winds and raiders that sometimes descend upon Icewind Dale.

With a population of roughly 100, Caer-Dineval is a small, insular community whose inhabitants rely almost entirely on fishing and trade to survive. The town endures the brutal winters with stoic resilience, but its people have grown wary of outsiders, preferring to settle disputes behind closed doors rather than in open confrontation.

The town is ruled by Speaker Crannoc Siever, a bombastic and overbearing figure known for his bullying demeanor and love of theatrics. Unlike the leaders of other Ten Towns, Siever governs from his fortress, adding to his reputation as a self-important recluse. His rule, while stable, has done little to improve the town’s economic prospects or ease tensions with its neighbors.

Caer-Dineval’s relationship with Caer-Konig is one of uneasy cooperation. The two settlements have a standing agreement to share fishing rights, but this tenuous alliance is often strained by disputes over territory and resources. Old feuds still fester between the two towns, and while their leaders maintain an outward display of unity, individual fishers frequently clash over prime fishing spots.

Both towns, however, share a common enemy—the larger, wealthier fishing fleets of Easthaven. Their alliance, though fraught with bickering, is driven by necessity, allowing them to hold their own against the more powerful Easthaven fleet.

While Caer-Dineval appears to be a quiet fishing town, rumors persist of strange dealings within the caer. Some claim that outsiders have been seen entering the fortress at odd hours, their business unknown to the townsfolk. Others whisper of secrets hidden beneath the ancient stone walls, remnants of a past the town has long since forgotten—or chosen to ignore.

Despite its dwindling population and frequent struggles, Caer-Dineval endures, its people as unyielding as the ice-bound cliffs that cradle their home.
