Ten-Towns Settlement

Score 220

10/16/24

Lonelywood, nestled in the frigid expanse of Icewind Dale, is one of the Ten Towns. Founded by a Sembian family from Urmlaspyr, it remains a quiet settlement where loggers, fishers, and scrimshanders scratch out a living on the edge of civilization. As the northernmost town in the region, Lonelywood is surrounded by the dense firs of Lonelywood Forest, with the vast Maer Dualdon to the west and the Bryn Shander Trail to the east.

The abundance of fir trees in Lonelywood Forest makes the town the primary source of lumber in Icewind Dale. Timber harvested here is used in the construction of buildings and boats throughout the Ten Towns. Logs are routinely transported to Termalaine, Targos, and occasionally to Bryn Shander. Despite being a significant lumber producer, Lonelywood's small fishing fleet is easily overshadowed by those of the other nine towns. Roughly half of the town's able-bodied residents fish for knucklehead trout in the lake, while most others spend their days felling and shaping trees to supply the region's timber needs.

Lonelywood's spirit of community is strong, with a tradition that expects hunters to share their catch, ensuring that every resident receives at least one full meal a day. Yet, the thick forest looming behind the town conceals darker secrets, as the remote location attracts its share of rogues and miscreants. Despite its reputation, Lonelywood is not lawless—survival's harsh demands compel its people to live and work together, leaving little room for grudges or past grievances. Visitors are welcomed and can easily make friends, but it is wise to avoid dredging up anyone’s past misdeeds in this tight-knit community.

Small in size and without fortifications, Lonelywood, along with Termalaine, is among the most frequently raided towns in the Ten Towns. During times of strife, it gratefully accepts aid from its neighbors.
