05/08/26The third floor feels more lived in than the upper guest quarters. This is where Newton worked, experimented, slept when exhausted, and—judging from the stains—occasionally caused magical incidents better left undescribed.
The air smells of:
- hot copper,
- parchment,
- cinnamon tea,
- ozone,
- and alchemical smoke.
A faint humming vibration runs through the stone beneath one’s feet.
Several bookcases along the various flat walls (North & West). An oddly curved inward wall with a door takes up the south-east part of this floor. There are also two doors in the North wall. A bronze statue is to the right of the stairway's door.
A cubicle desk surrounds a rotating chair. The desktop is very cluttered with all sorts of objects. Boxes with various components are at the outer edge of the desk. A stone owl is perched on the desk, and flirting with the owl is a pseudo-dragon, who seems quite put out as if he believes your entrance is cock-blocking him in his attempts to woo the stone owl.
A scroll cabinet is between the curved wall and the northern wall.

This room is warm. Pipes weave through the room which give off heat. There is a shelf that runs throughout the rooms exterior outside of the door and its immediate surroundings.
The Arcane Thermal Regulator
The southeastern chamber contains the tower’s Arcane Thermal Regulator, a magically-assisted boiler and heat-distribution system.
Newton discovered several inconvenient truths while building the tower:
Spell components degrade in cold damp air.
Alchemical reagents become unstable during rapid temperature fluctuations.
Extremely powerful magical calculations are easier when the surrounding environment remains thermally stable.
The heated pipes:
circulate alchemically warmed water throughout the tower,
prevent mold and moisture damage to books and scrolls,
provide constant bathwater to the guest rooms above,
and stabilize delicate enchantments embedded in the structure itself.
The shelves lining the heated chamber were once used for:
drying herbs,
incubating homunculi,
warming spell inks,
and proofing bread dough because Newton refused to separate magic from “practical domestic sciences.”
The system still functions because a bound fire elemental somewhere deep below the tower continues to fuel it.
Occasionally the pipes whisper in Ignan.
