A settlement of some sort

10/18/24Founding:
Founded in 492, Harnabolasze has existed as a quiet, agricultural village in the Sarcagia province of Karesh for nearly 150 years. It has seen the arrival of the Stormber families, who came to the aid of the Old Karesh people generations ago and have since integrated into the village’s life—though never quite as equals. The current year is 640, and while time has passed, tensions between the old settlers and the Stormber remain.
Description:
Harnabolasze sits deep within the endless plains of Sarcagia, the breadbasket province of Karesh. The village is surrounded by fields of wheat, barley, and other crops that seem to stretch forever, broken only by the occasional windmill or crooked fence post. The village itself is modest, with low wooden houses in the Old Karesh style—sturdy but showing their age, with thatched roofs that sag after too many rainy seasons.
The Stormber families, though few in number, have established more imposing estates on the outskirts of the village, their homes larger and better maintained, reflecting their superior status. These homes stand out, built in a style that mixes Stormber aesthetics with the functionality of the land they now govern.
At the village’s center is a small, crumbling Church of Veliya, the goddess of the harvest, where prayers are offered for a good crop each season. Time and neglect have not been kind to the building, but it still stands as a symbol of the village’s faith. To the west of the village flows the Sarcagia River, a slow-moving, muddy waterway that provides irrigation but is rumored to be haunted by strange lights at night.
Population:
Harnabolasze has a population of around 650 people, primarily humans of Old Karesh stock (Germanic-inspired), descended from the original settlers. These are proud, hard-working people, tied to the land and resentful of their limited power.
The Stormber families (Magyar-inspired) who arrived as rescuers generations ago now control the political and economic landscape of Karesh, and they never left. While few in number in Harnabolasze, they hold most of the authority, controlling key decisions and land. The Stormber are seen by the Old Karesh as a necessary evil—there is gratitude for their past aid, but also a lingering bitterness about the way they now rule.
Economy:
The village’s economy is completely driven by agriculture. The Old Karesh population toils in the fields, growing wheat, barley, and root vegetables to sustain the region’s breadbasket reputation. Small-scale livestock farming exists, mainly sheep and chickens, enough to feed the villagers and trade with nearby settlements.
The Stormber families, however, control the most fertile lands and oversee the export of surplus crops to the larger towns and cities. Profits from these exports largely bypass the village itself, benefiting the Sarcagia province and the wider Stormber-controlled administration.
While Old Karesh farmers struggle to make ends meet, the Stormber estates prosper, and this economic disparity is a constant source of tension.
Ruler or Leader:
Harnabolasze is nominally governed by a village council of Old Karesh elders, but in reality, it is Lady Hajnalka Tar, matriarch of the Tar Stormber family, who holds the real power. She ensures that the council’s decisions align with the interests of the Stormber elite and Karesh’s protectorate rulers.
Lady Hajnalka rarely intervenes directly in village affairs but maintains control through a combination of economic leverage and her connections to the wider Stormber nobility. Her presence is felt even when she is not seen, and her word is law.
Notable Personalities:
- Lady Hajnalka Tar: The matriarch of the Stormber family in Harnabolasze, a calculating and shrewd ruler who controls the village’s fate from the shadows. She maintains a delicate balance of keeping the Old Karesh content while protecting the interests of her people.
- Elder Balint Olvasar: The head of the Old Karesh village council, a grizzled farmer who outwardly leads the village but knows his authority is a shadow beneath Lady Hajnalka’s control.
- Nara Zomund: Tavern keeper of the Rusty Sickle, a sharp-tongued woman who knows all the village’s secrets. Though Old Karesh by birth, she’s managed to make herself indispensable to both factions.
- Constable Vanya Retz: The village constable, responsible for keeping order but lacking real power. She is caught between the resentments of her Old Karesh kin and the authority of the Stormber.
- Gerta Molnar: The village herbalist, who serves both Old Karesh and Stormber alike with her remedies and potions. She is rumored to have a darker side to her trade, particularly in poisons, and walks the fine line of village politics.
Culture and Society:
The Old Karesh population of Harnabolasze clings to their traditional ways, deeply rooted in the cycle of the seasons and the rhythms of the land. They honor Veliya, goddess of the harvest, through the annual Harvest Festival, a somber affair where prayers are offered for bountiful crops.
The Stormber families, by contrast, maintain more sophisticated customs, including feasts and seasonal celebrations that feel out of place in the hard-bitten, rural setting of Harnabolasze. The Stormber are more cosmopolitan and connected to the protectorate’s upper class, but they are still tied to the land in their own way, overseeing its management and ensuring their own prosperity.
The tension between these two cultures—Old Karesh laborers and Stormber rulers—is palpable, but open conflict is rare. The Old Karesh people recognize the Stormber’s role in protecting Karesh during times of crisis, but they chafe under the weight of their ongoing control.
Defenses:
The village is largely undefended, save for a handful of Stormber retainers who serve Lady Hajnalka Tar, and the constable, Vanya Retz, who oversees the village’s security in name only. These retainers are more interested in protecting Stormber interests than the common people, and in the event of a serious threat, the villagers would be left to fend for themselves. The Sarcagia River serves as a natural barrier on one side, but it is no real defense against raiders or other dangers.
Notable NPCs:
- Lady Hajnalka Tar: The ruler in all but name, who controls the village with quiet authority.
- Elder Balint Olvasar: The nominal leader of the village council, outwardly the village’s chief, but in practice a figurehead.
- Nara Zomund: Tavern keeper and collector of secrets.
- Constable Vanya Retz: Ineffectual lawkeeper, caught between the two factions.
- Gerta Molnar: Herbalist and possible poisoner, straddling the line between the two cultural groups.
Quest Hooks:
- The Missing Harvest: A significant portion of the village’s grain has gone missing during the night, and the Old Karesh farmers are blaming the Stormber retainers. Investigating the theft could reveal a deeper plot to destabilize the village’s already tenuous balance.
- A Call for Rebellion: There are whispers among the Old Karesh families of rising up against Stormber rule. Elder Balint Olvasar is too cautious to act, but some younger villagers are more eager to force change. The players may need to decide whether to calm these tensions or encourage a shift in power.
- River Spirits: Strange lights have been seen on the Sarcagia River, and villagers have gone missing. The Stormber dismiss these as superstitions, but the Old Karesh believe something sinister lurks in the waters.
Points of Interest:
- Rusty Sickle Tavern: The social center of the village, where both Old Karesh and Stormber rub elbows, though never quite comfortably.
- Church of Veliya: The village’s crumbling place of worship, where the Old Karesh population gathers to honor the goddess of the harvest.
- Sarcagia River: The sluggish river that provides life to the fields but is rumored to be haunted by spirits or cursed creatures.
Local Foes:
- Bandits: The roads between Sarcagia and other provinces are not safe, and the village’s lack of defenses makes it an easy target for bandit raids. The Stormber retainers might protect their own, but the Old Karesh farmers are often left vulnerable.
- River Spirits: Whether real or imagined, something seems to be stirring in the Sarcagia River, and villagers are disappearing.
Allies and Enemies:
- Nearby Allies: Other Stormber-controlled villages and estates across Sarcagia maintain loose ties with Harnabolasze, though the relationship is more transactional than friendly.
- Enemies: The village has no official enemies, but tensions simmer between the Old Karesh and Stormber factions, and rumors of bandit activity grow with each passing season.
Secrets and Mysteries:
- The Stormber’s True Intent: Some of the Old Karesh families believe that the Stormber retainers are not as benevolent as they seem. Rumors persist that the Stormber plan to claim more land for themselves, slowly pushing out the Old Karesh people.
- The River’s Curse: Old Karesh superstitions claim that the Sarcagia River is cursed, and the recent disappearances are proof of this. Some fear that an ancient pact between the Stormber rulers and the river spirits has been broken.
Rumors and Rumblings:
- Land Disputes: There are growing arguments between the Old Karesh farmers and the Stormber retainers over land use and water rights. With each season, the disputes become more heated, and the potential for violence grows.
- Disappearing Villagers: Several villagers have gone missing near the Sarcagia River, and the Old Karesh believe it’s a sign of something dark. The Stormber dismiss these claims, but fear continues to rise.
