Elturel

Elturel is a prominent city-state situated along the River Chionthar in the Western Heartlands, renowned for its agricultural bounty, thriving trade, and formidable military presence. As the capital of Elturgard, a theocracy devoted to Torm the True, Elturel stands as a beacon of law, order, and divine justice. Its defense is entrusted to the Hellriders, an elite cavalry force whose legendary reputation stretches far beyond the region. In addition, the city is safeguarded by the Order of the Companion, a revered paladin order dedicated to upholding righteousness and protecting the innocent.

Perched atop a high bluff, or tor, overlooking the River Chionthar, Elturel enjoys a commanding position both defensively and economically. The river below is narrow and shallow, allowing easy traversal by poling barges, which has long made the site an ideal center for settlement and commerce. The Chionthar also links Elturel with other major cities, including Berdusk, Iriaebor, Scornubel, and Baldur’s Gate, facilitating the movement of goods and people across the Western Heartlands and the Sword Coast.

Beyond its waterways, Elturel is a critical overland trade hub, situated at the crossroads of multiple caravan routes. The Skuldask Road runs through the city, connecting it to Thundar’s Ride in the Fields of the Dead to the northwest and to Berdusk and Uldoon’s Trail to the southwest. The Dusk Road, a lesser-traveled but vital route, begins in Elturel, winding northeast until it joins the Trade Way at Triel. These roads ensure Elturel’s continued prominence as a key waypoint for merchants and travelers journeying across the region.

What truly sets Elturel apart is the Companion, a brilliant orb of divine light that hangs perpetually above the city. Also known as "Amaunator’s Gift," this second sun does not emit heat, but its radiance is as bright as daylight, casting an eternal glow over the city. The Companion’s presence banishes darkness, burns undead creatures, and serves as an unwavering symbol of divine favor.

The Companion’s brilliance deters evil, preventing dark forces from approaching and making Elturel one of the safest cities in Faerun. Its glow is visible from nearly anywhere within Elturgard, fading only with distance.
